Avalon Getaway - March 12-14

Womens Sailing AssociationAvalon GetawayMarch 12-14

Ahoy fellow sailors,
Our March Avalon trip is right around the corner and it's time to fire up the ol' diesel and get out of the slip. Susan and Holly are hosting this spring get-away and have a fun trip planned.
The plan is to sail over Friday (or Friday evening for those who have to work) and enjoy dinner ashore on Friday night, maybe even slip into the Karaoke bar and belt out a few numbers (watch out American Idol!). On Saturday there will be a day hike up to the botanical gardens which should be just getting ready to bloom. A night at the movies is planned for Saturday at the historic casino theatre. The schedule is not out yet so if the movie is not to your fancy, you can take the casino tour which is highly recommended. On Sunday everyone will depart for a wonderful down-wind sail home.
Please contact Holly at hdavis787@hotmail.com if you are planning to join, have questions or are looking for a boat to crew on.PS - we will be keeping our eye on the weather - hopefully mother nature will cooperate - the website will be updated as we get closer to the event and get forecasts - please check there for event status.Kathy FancherCommodore - 2009LB/LA - Women's Sailing Association

America's Cup Opener Postponed

AMERICA'S CUP OPENER POSTPONED (Scuttlebutt online article)
Valencia, Spain (February 8, 2010) - Having two of the fastest, mosttechnologically advanced sailboats ever built doesn't do much good ifthere's not enough wind to sail them. It's almost as if Mother Nature pulleda fast one on the two bickering billionaires contesting the America's Cup. The opening race of the eagerly anticipated showdown between two-timedefending champion Alinghi of Switzerland and American challenger BMW OracleRacing was postponed Monday because of light, unsteady wind. The giant multihulls USA and Alinghi 5 were towed out of port before dawn toget to the starting line some 28 miles off the Valencia coast. They floatedidly for nearly four hours in the cold before the race was called off. --Bernie Wilson, Associated Press, read on: http://tinyurl.com/y97zltk * VIEWING: Some of the North American options: http://bit.ly/a0j9iY * SCHEDULE: The Match is won by the yacht to first win two races. Racewarning signal is at 10:00 am local time (CET), with race to start at 10:06am. Following the abandonment of racing on Monday (due to insufficientwind), the schedule will continue to attempt a race every other day(Wednesday the 10th, Friday the 12th, Sunday the 14th, etc.). * COURSE: The first and third races will be a course twenty nautical milesto windward and return; the second race, an equilateral triangular race ofthirty-nine nautical miles, the first side of which shall be a beat towindward. Golden Gate Yacht Club won a pre-event coin toss, and chose for astarboard end start entry for the first and third races.* EVENT WEBSITE: Look to the 33rd America's Cup website for event documents, jury decisions, and other event details: http://33rd.americascup.com/en/* TEAM UPDATES: Here are the best links for team information:- Alinghi: http://www.alinghi.com/en/ - BMW Oracle Racing: http://bmworacleracingblog.blogspot.com/

Dockwalkers

The California Department of Boating and Waterways and the California Coastal Commission’s Boating Clean & Green Program in partnership with the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation will conduct more Dockwalker trainings this year.

Dockwalkers will be trained to engage members of the public and the boating community in adopting clean boating practices. Once training is complete, these volunteers don their official “Dockwalker” hats. Dockwalkers educate boaters about clean boating practices and distribute educational materials (boater kits) while visiting marinas, launch ramps, marine supply stores, boat shows and special events (regattas, opening days, among others); and while conducting vessel examinations. As you realize, “Dockwalker” is only a generic term because you do not necessarily have to “walk the docks” in order to talk to boaters about safety and clean boating practices. You can educate boaters about clean and safe boating practices while conducting your vessel examinations or as part of your safety classes. Remember safety and the environment go hand in hand.

Training is FREE and Dockwalking is a fantastic way to interact with boaters to help keep California’s marinas, waterways, and ocean clean and healthy. The training provides an overview of environmentally-sound boating practices, information about how to conduct Dockwalking, and educational materials that Dockwalkers will distribute including the 2010 boater kits (http://www.coastal.ca.gov/ccbn/images/Boaterkit_08.jpg). These boater kits include: Reusable Canvas Tote-bag; A Boater’s Guide to Keeping Pollutants Out of the Water; 2010 Tidebooks; Oil Absorbent Pillow to capture oil leaks and drips in the boat bilge; a variety of informative Clean and Safe Boating Resources including the new publication produced by the Boating Clean and Green program, the “Environmental Boating Laws Every Recreational Boater Should Know,” the ABC’s of Boating Law and the new edition of the Southern California Boater’s Guide, among others.

In the last five years, more than 500 Dockwalkers have distributed over 90,000 boater kits statewide. Hours spent training or educating the public qualify as community service.

The benefits the Dockwalker program will provide to you, your clubs and members include:
· Supporting your current efforts, enhancing and broadening your clean and safe boating mission efforts
· Sharing resources such as the boater kit (important in these tough economic times), a valuable education and outreach tool to attract boaters’ attention and conduct face-to-face boater education.
· Providing you with more resources for your members, regattas and other public events and presentations
· Offering an additional method to protect our waterways
